Limassol History

The ancient history of Limassol is not completely known.  There is quite a bit of mystery that surrounds the ancient times, and what has been decided was pieced together through artifacts and other findings.  Historians have done their best to piece together a past that was not well documented.

That does not mean the history of the city is not rich.  Through the findings, it is agreed on that Limassol has been populated for a very long time, and there was a certain degree of struggle in the city.  While they do not know specifics about the early population, there are certain things they have been able to tell through their findings.

The main findings historians have found in regards to the ancient history of the area are graves.  There are graves that date back to the 8th century BC.  It is believed these graves show the city of Limassol tried to make it years before it was populated and called Limassol.  However, for some reason it did not work out.

By the time the 12th century AD came along, Limassol was a thriving city.  By then, the settlers had managed to make a city out of it, and it enjoyed prosperity unknown to many of the other cities in Cyprus.  Money was quickly coming into Limassol, and the population grew.

Limassol enjoyed being a major port in Cyprus, and because of that, it was able to have quite a bit of financial prosperity.  However, in 1424, the city burned down.  At that point, it had to start back from the beginning.  The city was devastated, and much of the population left.

By the end of the 20th century, Limassol began to enjoy a great deal of improvement to the city.  It was quickly moving into a city of the future, with better schools, museums, and other things that helped it become a leader in Cyprus.  The population was strong once again, and the city got its strength back.
